Only wavelengths in the 600-1100 nm range can reach the reticular dermis where most tattoos lie. Of these, the ruby laser is better absorbed by more tattoo ink colors than any other laser wavelength and can often completely remove tattoos in 3 or 4 treatments.

Q-switched ruby laser, the original Q-switched medical laser, remains the laser of choice in cutaneous pigment removal.

Pigmented Lesion Removal
Because melanin characteristically absorbs red light at all skin depths, the Q-switched ruby laser provides the most effective treatment available for the removal of benign pigmented lesions of both the epidermis and the dermis. Common indications such as solar lentigines and other benign pigments are easily eliminated. Excellent results are also typical in the treatment of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and many infra-orbital dark circles. The Q-switched ruby laser also represents the treatment of choice for many deeper lesions such as nevus of Ota.
